Crampton's Complete Guide of Flags (1989) has a description of
a military flag of Malawi:
"Red with a yellow climbing lion above the sun and wavy bars like in
the crest".

The Malawi Army has a flag. It's a vertical tribar. The hoist panel
is black, the middle panel is red and the fly panel is green. In the middle
of the red panel is the Malawi Army's crest or shield. It is yellow
gold. I don't remember details about it at this point. I have seen this
flag flying on occasion with gold Roman numerals defacing the upper black
hoist panel. I have no picture as every time I saw the flag, I was in a
place where cameras were forbidden.

I am sending some images of regiment or unit flags from the Malawi Army
which are based on photographs I took when visiting a flag manufacturer
in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1994.
From the badges on the flags I have assume the flags are:
Malawi Army - infantry/rifle regiment or unit which has a flag comprising
two thin vertical stripes of green and black at the hoist with a red
fly in the centre of which is the Malawi Army lion emblem in yellow with, in this case, two crossed rifles beneath.

Malawi Army - parachute regiment or unit has a flag comprising of two thin vertical stripes of green and black at the hoist with a red
fly in the centre of which is the Malawi Army lion emblem in yellow with, in this case, an open parachute.

Malawi Army - rifle unit or regiment whose flag has three equal vertical stripes of green, red and black, with the Malawi
Army lion emblem in yellow in the centre of the red stripe. This flag has a scroll bearing the the words "Malawi
Rifles" and not "Malawi Army" as in the previous images. In the canton are Roman Numerals which presumably refer to the number of the
unit or regiment. This is similar to the flag described by Clay Moss above.

This may be 2nd Battalion, the Malawi Rifles. The badge on the flag
is the regimental cap badge; the Roman numerals are probably the battalion
number.
